As Nigeria joins the global community to commemorate this year's World Radio Day, a communication scholar, Malam Musa Usman, has advised broadcasters to use the medium in enlightening  Nigerians on the importance of peaceful elections.

Malam Musa Usman, who is a lecturer at the Mass Communication Department, University of Maiduguri, Borno State, made the call in a telephone conversation with our Correspondent, Tasi'u Hassan, on the occasion of  World Radio Day, which is celebrated on 13th February, every year.

The goal of the 2023 World Radio Day theme, "Radio and Peace," is to highlight the value of independent radio in promoting peace and averting conflict.

Malam Musa Usman, said this year's theme of the World Radio Day, is significant to Nigerians, as the country heads towards the 2023 general election..

The lecturer said there are many voters in rural and semi urban areas, hence the need for journalists to use radio to enlighten them on how to vote and what they should do after voting in the coming general election.

 Musa Usman, pointed out that, in a developing society, Radio plays an important role in informing, educating and entertaining people, saying that there are still a lot of communities that do not have access to internet facilities.

 Also speaking in a separate interview, the Bauchi State Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, Comrade Umar Sa'idu, stressed the need for regular training of radio workers in order to impact on their listeners, just as he advised authorities to closely monitor the stations so as to sanction those operating illegally.

While calling for adequate funding of radio stations for the improvement of their operations, Umar Sa'idu implored Journalists to always uphold professionalism, promote peace and unity in their daily activities.
